RefWorks & EndNote: Tools to Help Manage the Literature

Both RefWorks and EndNote are bibliographic citation managers which allow you to automatically create databases of references to books, articles, websites, etc., you’re using for your research; to import or build links to full text and/or abstracting and indexing database records; and to format bibliographies, in-text citations and footnotes in any of a wide variety a styles in your papers. They take most of the grunt and guess work out of this once laborious process.

RefWorks is a web-based program, licensed by The Colleges, and accessible to faculty, students, and staff at The Claremont Colleges. Because it is web-based it is completely portable, and a database can be easily shared among several different researchers working on the same project. We recommend it for use by undergraduates and graduate students. It is easy to learn and has effective online help. RefWorks allows importation of records from most of the Libraries’ citation databases and offers a relatively simple procedure for creating in-text or footnote citations and bibliographies in a Word document. Papers can be formatted according to a wide range of styles including APA, MLA, and Turabian. A plug-in for PCs that adds a bit more automation to the process of inserting citations into a document can be downloaded from RefWorks.

EndNote is a full-featured database software package with impressive capabilities as well as many quirks. We recommend it for use by faculty and graduate students who are involved in lengthy research projects or who expect to publish extensively. Because the software is loaded onto an individual computer, it is not as portable as RefWorks and does not lend itself to collaboration. Although more difficult to learn, EndNote offers much more flexibility and is more fully developed than RefWorks.

Databases created in either program can be converted to the other, so if you begin with one and decide you prefer the other, your work will not be lost.

The Libraries offer support for both EndNote and RefWorks. Jason Price is the Libraries’ expert in EndNote; Gale Burrow provides assistance and teaches classes on the use of RefWorks.
