Get to Know the Libraries’ Subject Specialists

Librarians at the Libraries of The Claremont Colleges wear many hats. Almost all engage in collection development, some having one or two areas of specialization, and others having five or six. These Subject Specialists assess their collections in relation to the curriculum of the colleges, talk to faculty about needs for their students and research, and teach classes in the library in their areas of expertise. Information about subject specialization can be found on the Libraries’ web site in “Ask a Librarian,” where you will find a list of subject areas with the name of the librarian responsible for that subject area, their email address and phone number. We encourage you to look at this list and get to know the librarians with expertise relevant for your teaching and research.

In this issue of Connections we highlight two Subject Specialists.

Kimberly Franklin, Honnold/Mudd Library
Subject Specialist for Black Studies, Chicano Studies, and Cultural Studies

Kimberly Franklin has been a reference and instruction librarian in Honnold/Mudd Library since 1997. She selects print and electronic library resources for Black Studies, Chicano Studies, and Cultural Studies and offers classroom instruction and individual assistance to students conducting research or completing course assignments in those disciplines. She earned a B.A. in Urban Studies from Loyola Marymount University and an MLIS degree from the University of California Los Angeles Graduate School of Education and Information Studies. Kimberly is also a 4th-year doctoral student in the Claremont Graduate University School of Educational Studies. Her research interests include information literacy in higher education, the graduate school experiences of African American doctoral students, and the impact of information technology on college student learning and development.

Jezmynne Amergin, Sprague Library
Subject Specialist for Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, and Physics/Astronomy

Jezmynne Amergin has her BA in history from the University of New Mexico, and her MLIS from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. She arrived in Claremont on September 9th 2002, and assumed subject responsibility of math and physics/astronomy. This year she also assumed responsibility for computer science and engineering. You can generally find Jez working with her collections at the Norman F. Sprague Memorial Science Library, located on HMC campus. She is a collections oriented librarian, carefully monitoring the organization of and access to materials in her subjects. Additionally, she is on the look out for ways to integrate today’s technologies into libraries and for creative ways to make the library a pleasant, comfortable fun place to hang out and challenge your mind. She can be found online at jezmynne@libraries.claremont.edu.

We will highlight other Subject Specialists in future issues of Connections.
