The Government Publications Collections
THE DEPARTMENT
Government Publications
is located in Honnold/Mudd Library and is organized as a partially separate
department on the first floor of the Seeley Mudd Building. The Collections
areseparate from the main collection with the exception of refrence materials some
The library was designated a depository for U.S. government documents in
1913 and for California state government documents in 1953. International
government documents have been collected as far as back as 1920. We also
have a rare and select collection of British government documents.
THE COLLECTIONS
The collections consist
of publications from the U.S. government; California state and local governments;
British government; the United Nations and its specialized agencies, and
other International Intergovernmental organizations.
ELECTRONIC RESOURCES
There are many
electronic resources available in the Government Publications department. They
include bibliographic citation databases such as: Marcive Web Docs (Monthly
Catalog of U.S. Government Publications 1976-current); U.N. Documents
Index (Access UN); CIS Congressional Masterfile, and Statistical Universe. Also
available are full-text databases such as the Census of Population and Housing, 1990;
National Trade Data Bank; National Economic, Social and Environmental Data Bank;
TRI (Toxic Release Inventory), and many others. There is also terminal access
to our CD-ROM campus network, the Government Publications Department WWW
Home Page, as well as access to Academic Universe, an on-line service available
to Claremont Colleges patrons only.

U.S. GOVERNMENT PUBLICATIONS
The U.S.
collection consists primarily of publications received on a selective basis
from the U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO) through the depository library program.
The collection is shelved separately, in the south and west wings, with the exception
of microform, and arranged by the Superintendent of Documents Classification
System (Sudoc number). For example: C3.223/12:980 is the Sudoc number for a 1980
census document.
For more detailed information on how to find government publications
in The Libraries click on Finding
Government Publications. The current U.S. government publications are accessible through Blais, the on-line catalog, beginning in January of 1993. From 1976 to 1993, there is the Monthly Catalog of U.S. Government
Publications, a computerized file of records for U.S. documents on the WWW, and on CD-ROM,. From 1774 to 1975 there is the Document Catalog, and the Monthly Catalog--in paper.
We are working on automating the card catalog records for
publications received between 1976 and 1993 which will be included in Blais - the libraries' on-line catalog. The card catalog is still used to locate publications not yet included in Blais. The card catalog is closed for U.S. government publications beginning in late 1992. Please ask for assistance at the Main Search Center Reference Desk during this automation project.
U.S. DOCUMENTS IN OTHER LOCATIONS
There
are many U.S. Geological Survey and California Department of Water
Resources publications and Maps located in Seeley G.Mudd Library and the Geology Department,
Seaver South, Pomona College. Topographical maps are collected for Arizona, California and Nevada. For
information and use of these maps, please call the Geology Department Technician at
(909) 607-2952.
NASA and National Institute of Standards
and Technology received through the depository program are located at Sprague
Library on the Harvey Mudd College campus. Most of these publications are in
microfiche format. Please call (909)621-8920 for assistance with these documents.
CALIFORNIA STATE AND LOCAL DOCUMENTS
The California state government collection is located in the north
wing. The documents are in the process of being converted by California State
Documents Classification System. (For example: Calif. F272.S8.1987 is the classification
number for California Statistical Abstracts.) There is a separate card catalog for older documents, and
an electronic database for documents received since 1991. Please ask at the
Government Publications reference desk for assistance using the California
Documents collection. For more information about finding California State
information online, check here California State Resources.
Local government documents are collected on
a selected basis for the counties and cities of San Bernardino and Los Angeles.
They are shelved after the California state government documents, in the north wing. A
card catalog for local documents is the only way to find documents in the collection.
It is arranged alphabetically by title under the name of the issuing jurisdiction.
For futher information online, check Local
Government Information Resources.
BRITISH DOCUMENTS
The British documents
collection consists of selected official historical records of the British
government from the 11th century to current and all papers of Parliament (Sessional Papers,
Debates, and Command Papers) published by HMSO. This collection is shelved
on the 1st level, north, of the multi-tier stack. The documents are shelved by the
E.L.C. Mullins Text and Calendars (Royal Historical Society) numbering system.
There are guides and indexes to this system. Current Parliamentary papers are in
microfiche, and there is an electronic CD-ROM index called British Parliamentary
Papers available through 1994. A separate card catalog for British Documents
is located by the Mudd South elevator.
UNITED NATIONS AND INTERNATIONAL PUBLICATIONS
The Honnold\Mudd Library is not a depository for the United Nations, but has a
comprehensive subscription to most publications from the General Assembly; most
official organs and committees; the Secretariat; and specialized agencies available in
microfiche. Many publications from the specialized agencies are available in paper.
There are publications from the League of Nations (forerunner of the U.N.), as well
as from other intergovernmental organizations such as OECD, European
Communities, OPEC, World Bank and others.
The International documents are
located in the north wing. The collection is arranged by Library of Congress
Classification System. Except for microform and pamphlet U.N. documents, the
collection is accessible through Blais, the Librarie' on-line catalog for books. There is
a card catalog for U.N. publications located in the Government Publications
Department, some of which are still not in the on-line catalog. For further information

Government Information Resources.
