Art Subject Research Guide

Citing your sources Finding books using library catalogs

BLAIS the online catalog of the Libraries of the Claremont Colleges. Blais lists books and journal titles, not journal articles.

LINK+ a fast book request service and union catalog that allows to borrow books unavailable at our Libraries from several other LINK+ libraries.

Worldcat in FirstSearch has holdings of most libraries in North America and the U.K.. These books may be borrowed through ILL.

RLIN the combined library catalogs of several hundred research and special libraries (eg., museums and private research institutions). These books may be borrowed through ILL.

Searching for books by topic

If you are looking for books on a topic, begin with a Keyword search in Blais, the Libraries' online catalog, using the most significant words in your research topic. For example, I want to find books about Degas' images of women. If your keyword search finds some relevant titles, look at the subject headings that have been assigned; you can click on them to find more books on that subject.

Subject searching in library catalogs like Blais require the use of Library of Congress Subject Headings. Here are some sample LC Subject Headings to use in library catalogs:

Degas, Edgar, 1834-1917 -- Themes, motives
Modernism -- Art
Morisot, Berthe, 1841-1895 -- Criticism and interpretation
Artists and the theater -- France -- Paris - Exhibitions
Art -- Political Aspects -- France
Fauvism
Photomontage
Artists-Political activity
Constructivism (Art) -- Russia (Federation) -- Exhibitions
