Using Laptops in the Libraries for Internet Access

Users with laptop computers suitably configured for network access can plug into ports available for Internet connectivity throughout the libraries’ buildings. If your laptop has a wireless network card, please read the information about wireless network card registration.

Full internet access from your laptop is available only to current students, faculty, and staff of The Claremont Colleges.

By using your own or a Libraries-owned computer in the Libraries you are agreeing to the policy on Appropriate Use of Campus Computing and Network Resources as well as the Libraries' policies.

If you have questions about using your laptop in the Libraries, please ask at the Honnold/Mudd Reference & Information Desk. Libraries IT staff are available to assist you there during scheduled weekday hours.

You are responsible for securing your own machines against viruses and other attacks to reduce the risk of damage to your data and harm to other network computers. Prudent internet use includes maintaining an up-to-date anti-virus program and up-to-date patches for your operating system and applications. Use of automatic update features is recommended. In the future the Libraries may require up-to-date anti-virus software to be running on your computer before allowing access to the Libraries' network. Please contact your home college IT department or your local computer guru if you have any questions about safe use of the internet; Libraries staff will not be available to assist you.

Wired Access: Plugging into a wall jack

Full wired access to the internet from your laptop is available only to current students, faculty, and staff of The Claremont Colleges. Other library users will have no wired access from their laptops to the internet or to any other network resources.

To use a wired network connection you need to complete the NetReg online registration. NetReg allows us to match each computer on the Libraries' network with its owner, which will assist us in making sure that viruses and other problems don't propagate from the Libraries' network. If Libraries IT staff detect unusual network activity such as virus-like behavior or the transfer of very large files, registration allows us to contact the owner of the computer involved and solve the problem.

Instructions for NetReg Registration

Plug your laptop into one of the wall jacks marked with a red dot. Make sure your computer's TCP/IP settings are set to DHCP or "Obtain an IP address automatically." This is the default on most computers. Use a web browser to visit and follow the online instructions.

You will be prompted for your name and the 10-digit number from you College ID card. Registration is required once per semester.

Other considerations

FIRST. What you must bring with you and have installed on your computer:

  1. Laptop computer (Mac or PC) with an Ethernet card (PCMCIA) with appropriate connectors if needed.
  2. TCP/IP applications like a web browser, telnet program, POP mail client, etc.
  3. RJ45 patch cord for the connection from your computer to the wall jack.

SECOND.Find an active data port for connecting to the Internet. Please note that ports marked with a red dot are active.

  • Honnold/Mudd: New Library (3rd Floor) Wings, all bridge levels, and a few others throughout the building.
  • Denison, Seeley G. Mudd Science, and Sprague: Ask a librarian.

THIRD. What you must do once you’ve plugged your laptop into a data port:

Windows Users:

Windows 2000/XP is usually preconfigured with TCP/IP protocol.

Mac Users:

  1. Be sure that you are running the latest version of Open Transport (MACTCP will not work); you can download Open Transport from Apple's website.
  2. In your TCP/IP control panel, specify Connect via Ethernet and Configure Using DHCP Server.
  3. If you want to network with other campus Macintoshes, set your Appletalk control panel to Connect via Ethernet, and select network resources in the Chooser.

FOURTH. What you can now do:

You are now able to access the Internet, including many databases and electronic journals available via the Libraries’ Web site.

QUESTIONS?

Jusuf Wiriadinata is the primary contact for assistance with accessing the network with your laptop.

Wireless Network Card Registration

For full internet access via the Colleges-wide wireless network (the CINE network), students, faculty, and staff must register laptops through their home campus IT department. If you are not registered with CINE, you will only have access to local resources such as the Blais online catalog and the Libraries' and Colleges' web pages when you are in any of the library buildings. Please contact your home campus IT department for further assistance with wireless network registration.

Wireless Coverage Areas:

  • Honnold/Mudd Library, Honnold side floors 1-4 and Mudd 3rd floor only
  • Sealey G. Mudd Library (Pomona College)
  • Denison Library (Scripps College)
  • Sprague Library (Harvey Mudd College)

Network Configuration (defaults for most computers):

  • Setup the network TCP/IP configuration to use DHCP or "Get Address from Server."
  • Use the wireless client program to set mode to "Infrastructure."
  • Select the network with SSID CINE.
