Finding Government Information

Many times, the facts or information you need are located in specific government information resources (publications or electronic database files). Many government agencies that collect and disseminate information maintain World Wide Web sites. A number of pointer sites have been organized by governmental entities, academic institutions and libraries.

What are government documents?
A government document is a publication issued, published or financed by a government agency. Such agencies can be international, national, state, regional, county, or local. In addition to typical government documents such as laws, congressional hearings, and court reports, there are a variety of materials on a wide range of topics. These include such things as census data, economic data, educational reports, environmental studies, industrial surveys, health information, marketing research, legal materials, and statistics on just about any subject imaginable, including art, American culture, business, and the sciences.

Government Publications Online
This web site has been created by the Honnold/Mudd Government Publications librarians specifically to meet the needs of The Claremont Colleges academic community. Choose from any of the many links:

  • General Information, including hours and contacts
  • Electronic Resources such as the Census CD-ROMs
  • Federal, State and Local, and International government links
  • Course Guides for specific classes
  • Subject-related sites such as the Constitution, CIS Compass (legislative information) and other research guides
Links for Federal Government & Agencies (LSU)
This site provides links to many government agencies by jurisdiction, and/or agency name.

GPO Access
GPO Access is the database provided by the United States Government Printing Office which provides links to full text electronic data files housed at GPO and other government agencies. Includes databases such as the United States Budget, the Economic Report of the President, the Federal Register and the Congressional Record.

FEDSTATS
Government is the largest compiler of statistics on any geographic level. There are statistics from the United States government on a variety of topics including state and local governmental units. Remember that it is more difficult to find historical statistics than current statistics.
