How to Find Internet Resources

What Are Internet Search Tools?
Using Internet Search Tools

WHAT ARE INTERNET SEARCH TOOLS?

Although they vary widely in appearance and functionality, there are only two types of internet search tools: internet directories and internetsearch engines.

 What is an internet directory?

An internet directory is a program on the Internet that allows you to search for files and information by browsing hierarchical directories organized by subject. Many internet directories include a search enginewhich allows keyword searching within the directory. Yahoo is one example of an internet directory.
Why use an internet directory?
  • Because they provide an organized approach to the internet, directories are great for the novice or first time searcher.
  • They provide a subject hierarchy so searchers do not have to knowexactly what they want.
What is an internet search engine?
An internet search engine is a program on the Internet that allows users to search for files and information by entering keywords and phrases. Most internet search engines provide both basic and advanced search options. AltaVista is one example of an internet search engine.
Why use an internet search engine?
  • Search engines usually index a larger number of internet documents than internet directories do.
  • Keyword searching allows flexibility.
  • Search engines often rank search results.
Which is best for you?

Directories and search engines come in all shapes and sizes.  Each has its own unique interface and capabilities.  People have their favorites, but it is difficult to say that one directory or search engine is better than another.  One may be better for finding newsgroups, another may be better for finding corporate homepages, and still another may be better for finding images on the World Wide Web.

When you're trying to decide which search tool is best for your information need, ask yourself

  • What am I looking for?
  • How many documents am I willing to look through?
  • How many documents on the internet do I want to search through and how many documents are indexed by the search tools I'm considering?
  • Do I prefer the organized approach of a directory or do I want tocreate my own search statement using a search engine?
  • How frequently does the search tool update the items indexed?
Select a search tool based on your answers to these questions.

USING INTERNET SEARCH TOOLS

The Basics

To use a directory or a search engine effectively, use it the way it was designed to be used.

  • If you are using a directory, click on appropriate links to move around within the hierarchy.
  • If you are using a search engine with pull down menus, use them to compose the search.
  • If you are using a search engine without pull done menus, use the appropriate connectors. The following are fairly standard connectors for internet searching:
    • Use +  if your search must include the search term.
    • Use -  if your search must not include the search term.
    • Use “     “ to search for an exact phrase.
A search engine may also offer advanced search options.  These may include
  • Searching for segments such as people or images.
  • Limiting searches by location, date, etc.
The Keys To Becoming A Better Searcher
    • Read the search tool's help pages.
    • Use search options that complement a search tool's capabilities.
    • Become familiar with a variety of search tools.
    • Practice.
