Finding Newspaper Articles

The Libraries subscribe to many newspapers, both national and international; however, we keep the back issues for only a few of those newspapers.  Back issues of newspapers are generally kept in the microfilm collection in Honnold/Mudd.  The major newspapers for which we keep back issues include
  • The Los Angeles Times, (1886-  )
  • Le Monde, (1975-  )
  • The New York Times, (1851-  )
  • The San Francisco Chronicle, (1915-  )
  • The Times of London, (1785-  )
  • The Wall Street Journal, (1889-  )
  • The Washington Post, (1969-)
  • If you need to find a newspaper article, several newspaper indexes are available.  Be sure the index you use covers the geographic area and the time period in which you are interested.  Remember that sometimes the best index for your research needs is a paper index, not an online database.

    Online Newspaper Indexes

  • LexisNexis Academic contains the full text of over 3000 publications including many national, regional, and local newspapers.  Coverage for most newspapers goes back to the early 1990's; some go back to the early 1980's.

  •
  • Ethnic NewsWatch contains the full text of articles, editorials, and reviews published in the United States in over 100 ethnic and minority newspapers, magazines, and journals.

  •
  • Palmer's Index to the London Times, available to users at the Claremont Colleges or connecting to a Claremont Colleges modem pool, provides access to citations for articles from The Times Newspaper of London for the period 1790-1905; Honnold/Mudd Library has The Times of London in microform from 1785-present.

  • Paper Newspaper Indexes

If the online newspaper indexes don't meet your needs, several paper indexes, some going back to the 1800's, are available in Honnold/Mudd.  The newspapers themselves are available in microfilm

  • The Los Angeles Times Index, (1972-  )
  • The New York Times Index,  (1851-  )
  • The San Francisco Chronicle Index, (1976-  )
  • The Times [London] Index, (1785-  )
  • The Wall Street Journal Index, (1957-  )
  • If you need to find an article in the Los Angeles Times or another newspaper for a date earlier than the index covers, try looking for your topic in the New York Times Index.  Find the dates on which it was covered in that newspaper, then browse through similar dates in the Los Angeles Times.  Generally, news topics will be covered during the same time period in all major newspapers.
