Digital Dissertations: Accessing Full Text

After requesting a dissertation, you have 72 hours to read, download, or print item.

Files are too large for a floppy. Use a zip disc, or download to your own hard drive.

Do not download to a Library Search Center machine, please.

Previews: 1997-current titles have a "Preview" option which lets you see the first 24 pages. Click on thumbnails to view pages.

  1. Click "Free Download" button of selected title.
  2. Fill in email address then click "Download Now."
If you want more than one document, follow the "Add to Shopping Cart" instructions.
  3. After request is sent, you will receive a PIN number and the URL for access. Wait 5 minutes and then go to the URL provided and type in your PIN number.
  4. Look for the "PDF" icon in the "Download" box.
  5. To download the title, right-click on the "PDF" icon (see directions on screen).
  6. To retrieve the text in Adobe Acrobat for viewing or printing, left-click on the "PDF" icon. Dissertations files usually take about 5-8 minutes to load as Adobe Acrobat files.

Printing tips:

  • Page numbers on the original document are not accurate for print requests.
  • Use the browser scroll bar to identify correct page numbers when printing selected pages.
  • Do not try to print entire document all at once! Print in batches to avoid overloading printer.

Digital Dissertations: Searching tips

Author search: Type last name comma first name and change field box from "keyword" to "author."
Topic search: To focus your results, try typing a keyword or phrase for the most important aspect of your topic in the first box and change field box from "keyword" to "title." The database assumes you are looking for phrases.
Adviser search: Type last name comma first name (e.g., torjesen, karen) and change field box to "adviser"

Narrow results by using other search boxes to add additional aspects of your topic.
Broaden your search by choosing the "keyword" field rather the "title" word field: "keyword" searches for words in both titles and abstracts.
Use the truncation symbol ( ? ) to search various forms of a word, including singular and plural: adolescen? retrieves adolescent, adolescents, adolescence
Limit your results by using the "Date from / to" boxes
"Help" links to additional search assistance.

To print, email or download selected titles and abstracts:

  1. Mark titles using Marked folder box on left; click on "Marked List" on top menu.
  2. Choose print, email or download option at top of list.
  3. If printing, click on "Print List" and then use browser print icon.
  4. Output Format may be changed from Citation to Citation + Abstract.
  5. You cannot read or print the entire dissertation without downloading it first.
