Guidelines Governing Conduct
These Libraries are established and funded by The Claremont Colleges to facilitate
scholarship. They are private property and are not open to the general public. They
are only open to persons authorized by members of The Claremont Colleges consortium.
Priority is given to the students, faculty and staff of The Claremont Colleges for use
of electronic resources, study space, microform readers, copy machines, and other
equipment and resources. Use of the Libraries implies agreement to the guidelines listed
below as well as to the rules and regulations of the members of The Claremont Colleges
consortium which are subject to change from time to time without notice.
We expect all who use the Libraries to observe the rights of other readers and to treat
Libraries facilities and resources with due respect and care. In order to maintain an
environment conducive to effective research and comfortable study, persons who do not adhere
to these guidelines will be asked to leave. Libraries photo identification cards, which
are the property of the Libraries, will be confiscated without refund of any fee for
violation of guidelines or regulations.
If you have any questions regarding these guidelines, please talk to the staff at the
Information Desk or a Library Service Officer, who wears a vest with "Library Service
Officer" printed on the front, in Honnold/Mudd Library; or to staff at the Circulation
Desk in one of the Campus Libraries. If you observe any problems in the libraries, feel
unsafe at any time, or need assistance, a Library Service Officer and/or Library staff
will be glad to respond.
- Identification
- All library users are required to present a valid Claremont Colleges or Libraries photo
identification card for entry to Honnold/Mudd and when requested to do so by
Honnold/Mudd, Denison, Sprague, or Seeley G. Mudd libraries staff. Persons who do not
have a valid identification card may apply for a day pass. Day passes are limited to
no more than two days per semester and are valid for entrance to all four libraries.
- Theft of Library Materials or Equipment
- "In order to prevent the theft of books and library materials, state law authorizes
the detention for a reasonable period of any person using these facilities suspected
of committing 'library theft' (Penal Code Section 490.5)." Use of this library
implies consent to inspection of personal effects prior to exiting the building.
- Damaging Library Materials or Equipment
- Cutting, tearing, or defacing materials such as books, periodicals, pamphlets,
microforms, or tampering with equipment is prohibited and defined as vandalism
in California Penal Code Section 594.
- Use of the Libraries' Computer Resources
- The computer resources in the Libraries are provided to facilitate the education
research needs of library users. Priority for use of the computer resources is
given to students, faculty and staff of The Claremont Colleges. Some databases
are exclusively for the use of the students, faculty and staff of The Claremont
Colleges. Use of email on the LIbraries' web-capable computers is intended ONLY
for sending research results, such as citations from the Libraries' databases.
Sending and receiving personal email on these stations in prohibited. Using the
Libraries' telnet/email computers is restricted to students, faculty and staff of
The Claremont Colleges. Inappropriate use of the Libraries' computer resources may
result in the revocation of library privileges.
- Noise/Disorderly Behavior
- Disorderly behavior of any kind, including excessive noise, or harassing other
users or library staff is prohibited, as defined in California Penal Code Section
415.5 (disturbing the peace).
- Misuse of Library Furniture and Facilities
- Writing on furniture or defacing walls and elevators is prohibited and defined
as vandalism in California Penal Code Section 594.
- Food and Beverages
- No food or drink is allowed in the Libraries except in designated areas.
Food, gum and liquids attract insects and rodents, stain paper, and cause mold and
mildew. Consumption and disposal of food and beverages in non-designated areas of
the libraries is defined as vandalism in California Penal Code Section 594.
- Smoking
- Smoking and the use of any tobacco product are prohibited.
- Children
- Persons under age 18 without a libraries card must be accompanied at all times by
a parent or adult guardian who has a valid libraries card or day pass. Parents or
guardians are responsible for the behavior of the children in their care.
- Roller-Skates, Skateboards, and Bicycles
- The use of roller-skates and skateboards in the libraries is prohibited. Bicycles
are not allowed in the libraries.
- Animals
- No animals, except seeing-eye dogs, are allowed in the libraries.
- Loitering
- Persons entering or remaining on these premises when not so authorized are subject
to prosecution for trespass under California Penal Code Section 602(n). Loitering
is prohibited in accordance with California Penal Code Section 647B.
- Soliciting
- Soliciting for donations or signatures on petitions is not allowed unless approved
by the Director of Libraries and is in violation of California Penal Code Section
647C.
- Bulletin Boards
- Only flyers for campus events at one of The Claremont Colleges may be posted on the
bulletin boards in the libraries.
